Guns of Kampfer

Monday, November 9th, 2009

One of gentlemen who joined me to watch Kampfer, Hikago, asked: why didn’t Akane use a revolver, since it’s so popular in anime? He marked Trigun, Grenadier and Nanoha specifically, and could’ve added Sakura Taizen.

I swear I’m switching to Hatsuyuki from ep.06 onward.

The question actually goes down to the preference. Observe how Akane’s gun is magic, which is why she never needs to reload and needs no place to carry it. The same is actually true for all weapons in Kampfer. For example, Schwert (a bladed weapon) can deflect Natsuru’s fire blasts. So, Akane’s gun is an expression of a gun rather than a real gun, and thus it took shape of a random piece. It could’ve looked like revolver as well, but I guess Akane liked it more that way.

Sage, spoilsport as he is, revealed that “one of the [future] red Kämpfer[s] wields two revolvers”. Well, there you have it.

Hung on Kimi ni Todoke

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

KnT managed to raise BakuGasuBakuhatsu from the dead, as Hung shared his impressions. Long story short, he didn’t like it much. Check out this speculation, however:

Hopefully something will come up that will make the series more interesting. Like Sawako falling into a coma (probably not) or a super bitch coming along to steal the dude (probably more likely) or the dude having some dark secret like being Batman.

Nice, isn’t it? Now, Hung, watch Kampfer and tell me what you think of Sakura Kaede’s identity.

P.S. Oh noes, he made me to rewatch ep.1. Kickass show.

Moero Amazon on Karakuri no Kimi

Visuals at Moe.ro look interesting (for a 2001 vintage movie). Wakamoto voices the dude. The histogram at ANN is not promising, tops low.

Sagematt on early K-ON

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Looks like I’m one of those “influencer” people now. What a responsibility!

It’s eerie to see how Mio easily changes her mindset. First, she had no interest in joining the light music club, since she wanted to join the literature club (was it?). Next week, she is so into it that she doesn’t want the club to disband. Kinda felt a bit off.

Perhaps so, but it can be thought around easily by stating that Mio actually wanted to be in the band all along, only she was insecure about actually doing it. Remember that she does not possess Yui’s crazy talents (e.g. discovering muting all on her own), but she is quite competent. That means, she excercised for years before the club’s formation.

ps. I’m liking Mugi the most so far.

So do I, but to each his own. It is a well-rounded cast, so most can find someone to like (although there aren’t many characters). The flip side is, those who would like to hate, always have a target too (e.g. the “retard moe” in words of Evirus).

As I mentioned before, Mugi is a small, but notable step forward from Miyuki. She is, most importantly, not inconsequential with her tea and cake.

Ryan on Kampfer

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Apropos the previous post, Ryan remarks:

I would have joined this little session, except I lost interest in Kampfer when Sakura became very pushy and potentially dangerous.

Actually Sakura always was dangerous, since she presented everyone with their plushies. It should be clear from the ep.1 that she’s the final boss villain or a vessel slash channel for the said boss.

Watching anime in company of strangers

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

Myself, sagematt and hikago bunched together to watch Kampfer 05 a couple of days ago. What it actually means though, we went to an IRC channel, started our media players on a countdown, and exchanged messages like “LOL at Akane dropping Natsuru from a tree”. Very social! And they cannot sneeze H1N1 on you.

But I don’t think I’ll do it again, and this is why. Firstly, such excercise pretty much requires a dual-head set-up. But more importantly, it conflicts with my usual habit to pause a lot (to take screencaps, for example).

True tears BD extension

Friday, November 6th, 2009

ANN:

The box will include about three minutes of new footage as an epilogue that will depict the future of the main characters after the last television episode. However, production of the box will only be green-lit for a March 26 release if 2,000 or more pre-orders are filled.

I already have bought the DVD set. And now they announce this? I’d like to tel P.A.Works up where to stuff their pre-orders. Not that I rage about it or anything.

Seitokai no Ichizon is still weak

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Instigated in no small part by Hashi, I gave a try to Ichizon 05. It was nothing like this:

For me, it is a hip, smart, hilarious and humane self-referential comedy with great characters, total absurdity, and moe to spare.

Right, so I guess it’s extremely humane to lock a person into a coffin-sized iron box. If we did it at Gitmo, what would you say? I mean, outside of the “just deserts for fanatics” angle? Maybe it was hip.

The art is in the generally same style and is fractionally better than in Tayutama, but not by much.

UPDATE: Pablo linked me to a topical comic by our old friend WAH. I have to say his imaginary girlfriend delievered a more meaningful critique than I did above.

Micro-nouto 16

omonomono:

@jpmeyer maybe Lain? Do people still recommend that

@omonomono They recommend, but ABe went and fixed all the bugs in it for the Haibane release so why bother? It’s like recommending Win 3.0 when 3.11 superceded it.

Media Blasters license Queeen’s Blade

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

According to ANN, John Sirabella announced that his company licensed Queen’s Blade. This probably means that Juuden-chan will go to somewhere else, which is a pity; by all accounts a much better show than QB, despite the gross effects. In the same group, Funimation snatched Strike Witches (for DVD only — DTO is still on Crunchyroll, where I bought ep.8), but Sekirei is still available. Kampfer is still airing.

Kampfer > Sekirei > Juuden-chan ~ Strike Witches > Queen’s Blade
