Anime DVD discounts at Amazon

Sunday, March 28th, 2010

Via my blogging idol Instapundit (see, no comments) comes the word about a way to search Amazon for discounted anime (link). A cursory glance reveals that it’s not just a dump of yesterday’s trash. They offer Mushishi for $28.49 (!), Spice and Wolf for $31.99, 12K, GiTS and so on.

Sixten reveals the mystery e-mail

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Apparently, it was that a pro colleague of his, named EFINK, wanted to send a message of appreciation:

Also, I saw your work, “Miao Diary”. I read it all the way to the last page. It’s so interesting! I was really impressed to see that people other than the Japanese were drawing Nekomimi. I think it takes a special sense to like Nekomimi, and it seems that the height of its popularity in Japan has already passed. However, I think Nekomimi is well recognized as one of the lovely ones. To see that it is also recognized in foreign countries is wonderful.

Needless to say, to be recognized by a professional like EFINK is a great honor for me. I’m even more impressed that he persisted in trying to show his appreciation for my linking to his site, even if it took him a year. That must be the Japanese sense of honor.

Go, Sixten! And I knew from the start that Miao Diary would go on to better things than simply mocking Miao.

BTW, I’m glad that common people (e.g. non-programmers) still use e-mail, although I noticed that in only two recent years the e-mail traffic by commenters of Ani-nouto pretty much petered out, in particular from new people. In part it’s the general decline of the blog, certainly, but perhaps a shift in communication patterns played a part too.

Scarywater is still up

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

Accidentially visited the main page of a.scarywater.net and saw this:

Due to my lack of time and money to keep maintaining this site, it will be shut down by March 12, 2010.

Today is March 27, which is good, I suppose…

Josh on Kobato

Saturday, March 27th, 2010

On the premise that good anime cannot be spoiled, I’ve read what Josh had to say about the finale. Not going to regurgitate the details, but CLAMP seem to wrap it quite well, which is a welcome feature these days.

Myself, I dropped Kobato back in ep.2 due to excess stupidity of Kobato, but perhaps I’ll see it one day now that I know how it ends.

UPDATE: You’d think it were impossible to be more spoilerrific, but Kurogane manages it, even involving the hat! Jonathan Tappan’s guess turned out to be incorrect.

Democrat from NH wants to nuke Japan for anime

Friday, March 26th, 2010

Seen at Youtube:lp-USKnPDbY:

[Levasseur] wrote about a form of Japanese cartoons called “anime” as “a prime example of why two nukes just wasn’t enough”.

Anyone seen screencaps? What series got the dokey’s panties in the wad?

UPDATE: Apparently, Levasseur is a typical psychotic Democrat state Senator, which is still somewhat beside the point. What is his problem with anime?

UPDATE next day: Anime Diet runs the story, but the past is still unclear on what Levasseur finds objectionable. I suspect we may never know now that the political and nuclear sides predominate.

Aroduc on Kiss x Sis 01

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

First he said on IRC: “kiss x sis is still as abhorrent as ever.” Then, he posted a review that pretty much expands on the premise.

Coincidentially, I am in posession of a Netflix-ed DVD of Onegai Twins.

Omo springs in defence of Nova

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

Nova received some grief from peers (such as Kuro) for this: “In the end Sora no Woto was pretty much a light-weight version of Haibane Renmei and its enjoyability was greatly dependent on how one could get into the relaxing but somewhat melancholic atmosphere.” It was not just the comments, but also the mocking the hapless Finn suffered at #animeblogger. And now Omo comes out with the following analogy:

The second story changed in the way how the setting was revealed to us. In the meta-sense, that’s usually called “world building” or “character development.” There was a lot of that; entire episodes were dedicated to funny little tidbits about their world, about their social organization, about their religion and technology. I believe those who honed in on this subtle but strong narrative would have likened Sorawoto to Haibane Renmei. In that show, too, much of the narrative goes like our clueless protagonist in learning about the worlds both now resides. The audience learns about the world, and more importantly, explore and speculate, alongside with them.

I told you, guys.

Pixy on Kimi ni Todoke at 22

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The master of Meenuvia finds a time to watch, and sometimes blog anime (sadly, his peer at AB, Maestro, gave up on anime blogging entirely). This time it’s a hyperbole that I am having trouble believing was written:

Kimi ni Todoke. continues as the heir apparent to Gurren Lagann in terms of pure awesome []

I don’t know, was I ever so excited? And at ep.22+, too!

Kurogane on Sora no Oto

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

The write-up at Kurogane’s is typically spoilerish, so beware (most especially, do not scroll into comments). Overall seems nothing too spectacular, but decent. Although, has fillers in only 12 episodes (2 more coming).

UPDATE: Nova makes me laugh with the punchline in his collage comic; need to scroll slowly, I guess… Not posting a crop here so not to ruin the surprise.

Hashi-hime on 2010 Spring

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

The usual summary is here. Since I’m in my “Fate T. ruined all of anime” mode still, I probably won’t be seeing anything. Oh heck, who am I kidding, I must know the color of 3rd year neckties in K-ON. Anyway, Hashi-hime is a true stalwart of animeblogging. I think we’ll mourn like over Omni when new season rolls in and there’s no summary.
