RP’s trip tips

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Reading the tips like RP’s amuses me in the same way children playing in a sandbox must’ve amused Einstein, which is doubly ridiculous because of the point I’m going to make here: RP’s experience barely scratches the surface, and I learned it the hard way. After a trip like his there’s a feeling that if you do not know everything, then at least you know enough (or enough to teach others on blog), which is not necessarily true… Still, I’m quite curious if he really spent a night in a love hotel.

Since we’re on the topic, on my second trip I was inspired by the example of Adun to rent a car. It was a riot of hilarity. For example, I forgot how to say “mantan”, and ended buyig all of 1.36L of gasoline (about 1/3 of a gallon). And of course just when I started feeling confident and relaxed, I ended on a wrong side of the road. Also, I accidentally entered IC (Japanese name for “turnpike”) and had to drive a few kilometers until the next exit, at which point I ran outside of the prepared street map.

I think the fun thing for people following in RP’s footsteps would be to venture outside of Tokyo with its comforting Yamanote and Suika card (like Brickmuppet’s trip to Kanazawa, for example). And of course, the usual: onsen, ryokan, Kyoto and K-ON tourism (alt).

Bloggers on Full Moon wo Sagashite

All right, jeez, no need to go nuclear. I’ll watch your Full Moon. In a couple of months.

Actually, it was in my queue for years, since I noticed that the hystogram at ANN topped at 1, which is usually reserved for masterpieces like Haibane Renmei.

DiGiKerot gives Alice cleavage

As for the Angel Beats is Haruhi commentary, they said that Sora no Oto was K-ON too (when in reality it’s more like a bastard offspring of Kokoro Toshokan and Allison & Lilia).

Evirus was right about Max Heart

First he completely accidentially sold me on the concept with the “rebar in the face” (although the official advo helped too), but then tried his best to explain that it’s the same thing as the original and whatnot. Well, he’s right, but a) it’s self-contained like the Star Wars ep.4 to 6, and b) would you just look at the quality!

One thing that now bothers me is how Max Heart (and the original for that matter) is clearly superior to Sailor Moon… or actually to SM as I remember it from the TV broadcasts (which I started watching in Russian voice-over, but added a bit of U.S. dub later). Due to the big gap between then and now, the perception is very off, so my quest now is to find a novice animblogger with a penchant for rewatching classics (kind of like Theowne’s December Binge, only for series) and get a second opinion.

But still, what if Precure really is that much better? SM came to define anime in the mainstream together with DBZ enough for Robot Chicken to make that memorable skit. Max Heart is not even licensed. So, what else have the R1 importation industry had beed hiding from the American fans?

Remember Ani-kuri?

The post at Polymetrica reminded me to check if DVDs finally came into existence… And guess what, CDjapan is out of stock. As usual. Amazon agreed to sell the set, although apparently they have a new trick: sales are not done by Amazon.co.jp anymore, but by “Amazon International Sales”. Oh well, as long as it works.

Being not the “usual” format, it’s a video that I can share with normal people, so I quickly torrented a fansub off Bakabt, and TiVo-ed it. Probbaly won’t even remove the shrink-wrap off the DVD when it arrives.
