Stella C3 begins

Saturday, July 27th, 2013

I suppose that I started watching Stella something-something C3 (-bu) because I really wanted to like Garupan, but could not, and this seemed like a less idiotic remix of the same. Only it’s not. If anyone wants spoilers, Kuro and SDB have them (the latter — in comments). But the important part is that everyone who scoped it in the new season was misled. At some point Nova’s commenters thought it was going to be like K-ON!

Just one thing is left to add: I’m not down with any series, no matter how great, to take 4 episodes to blossom. Granted, Stella did not start as poorly as Manabi, but there we only had to survive 1 episode, not 3 here. Do I have to bring up Haibane Renmei, Shingu, RahX (and a bunch of other good shows that open strongly) every time this happens? I know that a competent director can do it!

On second thought, they did drag me along to ep.4 after all, so no matter how much I complain, the creators succeeded.

Nova on Stella 08

While I’m sympathetic to his rants about “god-moders” ruining his hobby, I am not quite sure that Nova laying hate on Rin is justified. It is, after all, an anime.

For all her posturing about the war and “any means necessary”, she seems to fight hard, but fair. We know that her underlings called out the hit even when there was no cameras, in the first match with Stella. I think this is respectable, if creators want to keep with the characterization consistency.

UPDATE: Brickmuppet calls Rin “malevolent”, while I have a supposition: perhaps Yura can only form the reality marble if she’s having fun. Of course using one in airsoft would be an even worse cheating, IMHO.

Brickmuppet on Stella 09

How’s this for analysis:

Yura hates her personal weaknesses which led her to such misery in the past by preventing her from having any fun. Now that she has begun to overcome her weakness she will allow nothing to hold her back from strengthening herself… least of all fun.

Stella C3 ends

Sunday, September 22nd, 2013

Stella C3-bu spent the last 2 episodes unconvincingly unwinding the Yura spring that they wound up so tightly. She did not remember her desire to grow even once, instead longing for a place to belong. And the animation took a major nosedive at the end. Not quite EVA stick figures, granted, but it was impossible to ignore. Usually this sort of collapse is reserved to the shows that are abrubtly cancelled and run out of money.

So in the end Rin is the best girl in the show that Yura should have owned, Sono-chan and the crew shine, and Yura is just an inconsistent loser character flopping in the wind. I do not remember anyone blow the early promise so hard since Kamichu.

Liked: Was amused at first, but then it all fell apart.
Rewatch: No.

P.S. You know what’s the laffoest part? Stella was billed as a competitor to GaruPan when announced.

UPDATE: Jonathan Tappan mentions in comments at Chizumatic that there was, in fact, a preview for ep.13 of Stella. Apparently I let GAINAX fool me into thinking that it ended. Oh well.

UPDATE 2013/09/24: Omo disagrees.

UPDATE 2013/09/27: Nova writes:

This year’s tribute to the gun and military nerds, I expected C3-bu to showcase the fine hobby of shooting other people with toy guns, something like Garupan with cute girls battling it out with various quirky gangs and learning all about being girls and fluffy and friendship and stuff.
