Fansub as official script

Companies sometimes steal from fansubbbers, so it would be interesting if they started buying instead. However, the official announcement says nothing about the source of the script. The only evidence is Roxfan’s e-mail.

Official Russian title “Девочка, покорившая время” (The Girl Who Conquered Time) sounds not too bad, although it probably says something about the Russian psyche and the conquistador complex. Now you guys know why everyone in the West is so wary about the Empire.

Unbelievable:

At the 6pm showing last night, I counted less than 30 heads in the theater.

Jumping into a car and driving to L.A. is not a big deal for me, it’s only 4.5 hours away by I-5. However, I’m a bit busy throwing my belongings into cardboard boxes for a move which cannot be rescheduled. It simply is a bad time. I’m going to miss Yoko Ishida at AX, too. But what about the rest? Everyone has got an excuse too, apparently.

UPDATE: Scott twittered: “The crowd was still very small, probably only a dozen. The weather is crappy today, so that could be the reason for the low turnout.”

Bandai parties for Tokikake DVD

According to an entry at their official blog, Bandai is throwing a party in L.A. next week. I’m going to rent from Netflix first. The hype scares me.

There’s even more bad-assedness: free theater screening in the SUB. Awesome, amirite? That’s next Friday at seven, so if you wanna see The Girl Who Leapt Through Time fo’ free on a huge frikkin’ screen, you best be there.

Needless to say, I’m psyched. Note that it’s Friday, December 12, 19:00. Not the usual club meeting on Saturday.

UPDATE: Screening is cancelled 4 hours before the scheduled time.

Tokikake

This is why I have the rule never buy DVDs for shows I didn’t watch (and the one I violated the other day, bet true tears is going to suck). I tried to leave the screening 3 times, but my family restrained me.

Certainly, Tokikake is not bad bad, just immensely underwhelming and disappointing after all the fawning coverage it received on the blogs. To begin with, the fundamental animation was insubstantial. The story was all emo and no conflict, no struggle; Marimite-like. Characters were ok, I guess. Dudes were much too perfect and cartoony, but it’s not like anyone got much chance to shine. There was barely enough acting time for the lead to show herself.

If anyone wants to see a much better movie about the same thing, watch Whisper of the Heart.

UPDATE: Aziz hints about the personal credit. Indeed, he was one of the voices, and so was BigN, I remember that much. Lawson, probably, too. My database capsule says “Muppet, NickIstre, etc.” and gives two URLs: for Wakaranai and Claiming Ground. That I saved them probably means that I meant to debate finer points of the reviews with the two, but now I see no point.
