Good heavens, this was bad. I'm so happy it's over.
It's quite possible that manga was good, but adaptation was done improperly. Watching the series I've got a feeling that a novel would read pretty well. Looking at credits, it stands to reason that ABe himself knew the medium and so series with his heavy involvement came out well. I didn't like Lain much, but it certainly was quality work where NieA_7 wasn't.
And in passing, low budget does not have to make the result look like shit (watch Hidamari Sketch for a proof). I guess creators of NieA_7 didn't know that, and they felt justified to produce these horrors. The main issue for me was how the episodic anime was done improperly, with characters not doing enough to showcase themselves, and heck, with comedy sorely lacking. But the hideous animation made it a lot worse.
I was happy Figure 17 was over too, because it was difficult to watch for someone who empathizes with characters. Still, now that it's done, I sometimes think back to it and say, "such and such scene sure was nice...", or "why should Ribers be self-aware?". It had the substance. But I cannot picture myself recalling NieA_7 willingly, there was just nothing there.
