What is anime

TJ of RIUVA made a comment somewhere (I ended there following from Omo):

If you take off the rose-tinted glasses, you’ll realise that most of the anime you mentioned were quality only in their own time. Sure, they were great back then, but people have taken those and built onto them to create better ones.

The original MSG, Zeta and all those much-lauded series are actually shit. The best Gundam is 08th MS Team and MS Igloo. The MSG laid out the world settings which the two latter series utilised.

But you need to watch better anime. Anime that isn’t anime-styled. Recently, we have had Baccano, Shigurui.

I am with TJ until the last paragraph. I just do not like non-anime styled anime. When Japanese animators rip off American or Russian animation, it may be artistic or creative (like early Samurai Jack), but it's not what I want in my anime, because I can watch the originals just as easily. Since I do not go for this kind of thing, it's difficult for me to remember good examples, but once upon a time I watched the "Canon City" segment of Memories, which is a beautiful clone, homage, or ripoff of Russian animation from the 90s (and not just in the art style).

It there's not much of unique context, it does not attract my attention. For example, Witch Hunter Robin is a miniseries from American TV, only animated in Japan using anime arts.

Note, I'm not agitating anyone for the purity, it's only a public statement. TJ's position is just is valid, but I'm not TJ, and so it goes down to a purchasing power contest in the marketplace.
