Case in point, Protaku's top 10 at IGN. I think I can add a diminsion to it by posting the Amazon rankings (using the latest available volumes):
10. Highlander: 7,334
9. Witchblade: 4,827
8. Beck: 9,335
7. Mushi-shi: 15,336 (Amazing. But I didn't buy it either...)
6. Air: 19,344 (Haruni's magic does not rub on easily)
5. Haruhi: 7,463 (not bad for something so old)
4. Tekkon Kinkreet (only $20): 5,603
3. Afro Samurai: 6,287 (word!)
2. Death Note: 2,664
1. Paprika: 663 (a fraction behind Naruto's 559).
First, it's easy to see how crap like Highlander manages it into the top 10: if you beat sales of Mushishi, poor industry pundits have no choice but to add you.
Second, movies do well. BTW, my family rented Paprika and remained underwhelmed.
Third, Amazon bundles Afro Samurai with Boondocks based on sales.
Finally, congratulations to Death Note. Well done.
All in all, a sensible list in a way. So, why is it useless? That's because I don't want anything on it.
Bloggers' Top 10 at least have some consistent taste and explanations. But a general Top 10 is a patchwork of tastes, including those of numerous racist bigots. That does not help me to find anything watchable at all.
Ramen Fighter Miki has a rank of 61,971.
