The 3rd volume of Rocket Girls turned out to contain the extras, including the pilot episode (I think it's the episode that a studio made when selling the show to sponsors). I thought I'd have an apoplexy from rage. The art is just amazing, especially if we compare it with the definitive TV series. We were so short-changed.
It is not the first time such dramatic cost-cutting happens before the TV run. For instance, compare Azumanga VSM with Azumanga proper. But Azumanga had art which was expressive, even beautiful in its minimalism (not to mention faithful to manga), and the animation was remarkably defect-free. Not so with Rocket Girls. So please pardon me while I rage at the realities of anime business.
P.S. What are chances of a Kanon-style remake 4 years down the road?
