DiGiKerot on K-ON

Beta-Waffle:

KyoAni’s latest effort - a 4-panel adaptation K-On! - I can’t really imagine making the kind of impression that Lucky Star did. Lucky Star had something of a common base with those watching in that such a large part of humour was so otaku-centric. Whilst attempting to form a band without an ounce of musical ability isn’t exactly an unusual occurrence, I can’t really say it’s something that particularly resonates with me - It could be the funniest show in the world, but I doubt it’d click with me even if it was. I’m sure the show will sport KyoAnis usual stellar production values, but it just doesn’t appeal to me.

My pet idea about K-ON is that it would be awesome as a reprise of Manabi, which turned upon the titanic struggle of the 4+1 main girls to save their festival. Usually when a director wants to highlight characters at such level, he has to resort to robust violence, tragic love, robots with drills, end of the world, or a combination of them. One thing about Azumanga was that while it had well developed characters, they were not challenged; everything was pastel colored. But the fury of the conflict in Manabi allows to paint everyone in primary colors.

It would be terrific if K-ON took such route under a competent director. Of course I say that without having an inkling about the 4koma. Most likely another Hidamari Sketch will come out, I cannot know. It's just the similarity of the premise where girls band together to save their club is what strikes me.

As for Lucky Star, I liked the most its non-otaku parts, like the ghost visit. I would not say that I cried like a baby, but it was close.
